I'm looking for a US army 3 color desert BDU that won't cost me a kidney...
I have been to Echigoya and the ones they have at 5,800 JPY don't look the part: the green color of the 3 tone is closer to "shocking green" than the very pale color of the real stuff.
Any idea where I can source a good 3C BDU whose price won't skyrocket?

You can check out S&Graf, they have some nice quality BDUs, unfortunately the do cost more than Echigoya. Looking to spend a a little over 10,000 JPY for the top and bottom but I guess you get what you pay for.

If you're considering buying in Japan then I recommend yahoo auctions, aka YA. The sellers are generally reliable. The lowest price is often on YA for the Japan market.

If you're uncomfortable with that, then try Nakata Shoten in Okachimachi (north of Akihabara), which is a mil gear surplus store.
ebay should be your first stop!
hmm, bought a new Propper DCU import from the US at 6,437 JPY, postage included on ebay.
A bit pricey as used one and in good shape can be had for 4,598 JPY on ebay.
Still that's only 1,000 JPY more expensive than the chinese copy from Echigoya.
Well, trying to rationalize here... not that obvious to be a "bargain" hunter. :^
