Its possible a mortar or artillery round could have sent this flying as shrapnel and lodging it in the tree. However, doesn't that tree seem a little thin to be over 60 years old?

Looks like Bastogne....

60 years on the helmet would be covered in moss and would have rusted. Also the bark below the helmet would have recovered and returned not still scraped away.... Im calling photoshop!

Good call! But this photo is pretty low quality and its hard to make out.
