What are all of the parts that make up an airsoft m4...meaning if I wanted to build completely from scratch what would I need? does anyone know of a complete parts list/guide online?

It's gonna cost a lot mate... you might want to consider buying a good looking M4 full metal, and then change it to whatever... just my conclusion after looking at parts just to mod my M4 S-System.

AFAIK the AR-15 (M4 or M16) is the only model you can completely build from scratch (conversion kits not included) - electric or gas. If I was a fan of the platform I would have built one long ago. The pros of building one is that it has everything you want in it. Con is the cost.
What are you going to need are:
1. version 2 gearbox - in parts or a whole set (like maybe Systema Revolution). The whole set would have some parts that are kinda hard to find, like the safety/selector lever thingy (NOT the one outside). If you're going for a build-your-own gearbox, you'll need the piston, piston head, spring, spring guide, cylinder (to match your inner barrel), cylinder head, nozzle, tappet plate, gearbox springs, switch assembly, trigger, safety/selector thingy, selector plate, bushings/bearings, gears (with shims), cutoff lever, anti-reversal latch, and of course the gearbox shell.
2. receiver set - you'll probably go for an aluminum receiver.

4. stock pipe and stock - depends on you if you want the batteries in the stock or not. Your gearbox wiring is also dependent on this.
5. outer barrel - depends on your preferred length.
6. handguard and ring - these sometimes go with an outer barrel
7. inner barrel and hop-up chamber - you have to buy the two separately though
8. flash hider
9. motor
10. grip and grip cover
11. sights and optics
12. magazines
I guess that's it.

I've built prety much the last 5 M4's I've owned from scratch! That Includes:
9mm Noveske Talon,
Vltor MUR,
M16A2/M203,
KAC SR16 with LaRue RIS
and others!
Also Built 3 AK's from scratch as well.

What is the average cost of these builds (in a PM would be ok if you don't want to post that public). I have been thinking about trying my hand at building something from scratch as a project...figure that will really teach me about the internals and working of each machine.

hahaha.... it depends on the build and the quality of the internals. Alot of the guns I have built with stock Marui Gear Boxes which Echigoya will sell you for around 10,000 yen new. But you can also buy prebuilt 7mm 8mm bearing gearbox from King Arms for about 150 -200 USD
The quickest way to do a price listing is to basically log on to WGC or Redwolf Airsoft and actually select all the parts your after then at the end it will summerize the cost for you.

Yah, that was exactly the reason for asking for a parts list.
I feel like I am 18 again, looking through worn out cycling catalogs, trying to decide what would be the best parts to go with that dream titanium frame I was "someday" going to buy :-)
I will use hazards list to try and put a list together.
