I just thought I'd let you all know that the first part of the new HBO mini series : The Pacific is available as a torrent.

Just finished watching it and ... epic!
I edited your post. You may want to watch your language as we do have some youngsters reading this.
WOW! i had no idea that word was worthy of censorship... is willy acceptable?

Yeah, sometimes I watch the BBC and I'm like, WHOAAAA, easy up on the language! We're a little softer across the pond Tongue

Just watched the first episode also. Very good, it hasn't grabbed me as strong as Band of Brothers, but I think it has potential to get there. Some of the best scenes are in between the fights, watching the soldiers live with the weight of taking lives. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series.
Just watched Part 2

Really really intense...really.

Anyone else watching this?

Definitely upping the combat in this one. I'm enjoying the series overall, and it's been a good follow up to Band of Brothers. The cast seems somewhat smaller to me this time, or at least I'm having trouble separating them in my mind. The main character Eugene is pretty strong, but I'd like to see more from the rest of the cast.
well, supposing that it'd be legal for us watching in Japan, I am not sure I'd hypothetically like it. There are supposed to be nice effect that I have heard of, especially the naval battle seen from the shore, but overal, I think I'd have difficulties following who are the main characters. Not sure I'd like it as much as BoB.

It's definitely living in the shadow of Band of Brothers. Again the biggest thing for me is they haven't done a great a job of separating the characters and making them distinct. Even after the first episode of BoB I felt like I could I'd at least 10 distinct characters and identify them by name. So far after 2 episodes I only know Eugene and John.

The Jungle battle in episode 2 was fierce though, and really showed the sort of mess those types of fights can devolve into. Hand to hand, beating a dude to death with whatever is at hand. Brutal.

Overall, I'm looking forward to where the series goes.
I have to agree about the charters and not being able to see who is who and there different personalities. But on a different note i am loving the cinematography of the show. Just like in BOB it was out standing.
Just finished the 4th episode. This is more of what I was looking for, the real deep psychological damage these guys were suffering. BoB only touched on in it I felt, when the Sgt. Buck character had a breakdown. But this went way deeper, especially in the scenes where they are walking through the base executing the wounded.

Cool i have this episode and will check it out Smile
Hey Tobo,
I just finished watching the last episode of this series. As a father of 3 kids, the last few scenes really choked me up, especially Eugene"s father standing outside the door as his son has nightmares, and then having to defend his son's idleness to mother.

A very powerful series. Thanks for the recommendation.
It was a great show, i have to agree with GingaNinga about the last episode and the feelings Eugene was having. It some what reminds me of a BBC show that i have on WW1 where battles went on for months at a time and body counts in the hundreds of thousand for both sides.
Damn it, started watching again but because of the naming convention they use I jumped from episode IV to IX without paying attention... I was like "hu, did I miss something?!". Anyway, don't know who those guys were, but episode IX was taking, even my gf was moved by the scene in the house.
Glad you are all as much into this as I am. Like the Ginger said, the last episode was very moving. I had my doubts about this show half way through the series but I am glad that I had the chance to experience it. As far as individual stories and showing what war is really like, this beats Band Of Brothers. I don't know if that is because up to now movies and TV dramas have often tried to glorify the second world war and they haven't really shown it for what it was: a meat grinder.

For anyone who hasn't yet seen it I really recommend it, just don't expect it to be easy viewing.

10/10
